Ted was a chicken. She hated her name. That name is so roosterish, she would think.Like all other chickens,Ted laid eggs.

Every morning a little girl, no more than eight years old would come to collect the eggs all the chickens laid.

Ted loved the morning. She didn t like it because it was the start of a new day, nor because it was so pretty, but because Ted loved to hear the little girl sing.Every morning when the little girl came she would sing in a voice that floated, and seemed to echo over and over and over again.

All the chickens hated Ted for liking to hear the girl sing. One night Ted overheard the chickens C.F.T.Which stood for council of three, decide to banish her by the time the week was out.As Ted bedded down in her patch of straw, she thought that the council didn t need to banish her.She would be gone within the next day.

Ted was already awake when the sun appeared above the horizon. When the little girl opened the door,Ted exploded out the door, around the feed bins, through the hay loft, under the machinery, over the trash heap, and into the barbed wire fence.

Carefully, Ted eased herself out of the wire trying not to get scratched up more than she already was.A few minutes later Ted was out of the barbed wire and had safely crawled under it.

What Ted saw froze her in her tracks.Stalks of golden grain rose above Ted like redwoods. The grass so green it looked unreal. The sky so blue you couldn't even imagine it.

That is what Ted saw.Slowly Ted hopped along taking in all of her new surroundings.

By the time night came Ted stopped to recall all she had experienced in one day.The other chickens would be so envious of Ted if they could see what Ted had seen. Dusk fell and the night became cold.Ted shivered with delight.

Arrrrrooooooo.Ted froze. A minute passed by and again Ted heard the wolves ghastly howl.It sent shivers up Teds spine.

Ted could now hear a crashing sound of a big animal traveling very quickly. A wolf sounded a howl right behind Ted.Spinning around to face her opponent Ted saw a wolf for the first time.It was covered in grey fur that seemed to reflect the moons light in a silvery sheen. It had a long wet snout and pointed ears.Claws longer than Teds beak extended from its paws.

Before she could even flinch, the wolf had Ted pinned down.Be quiet and don t say a word, The wolf whispered urgently.
